China is advancing a yak cloning effort in Tibet with the goal of building a herd of high-performing animals adapted to life at extreme altitude. The work is reportedly being carried out in laboratories about 4,000 meters above sea level, where researchers are focusing on an animal that remains essential to daily life and the regional economy.

Yaks are a major source of transport, meat, milk and fiber across parts of the Tibetan Plateau, so improving herd quality could have wide local impact. The project is described as an attempt to produce healthier, more productive animals by using cloning and selective breeding methods rather than relying only on traditional herd development.

The initiative also comes as both domestic yaks and wild populations face pressure. Reports indicate that some rare yak subspecies are at risk, adding a conservation dimension to the research.
