Google has joined OpenAI, xAI and other major technology companies in backing an open letter that asks US policymakers not to impose early limits on open-weight AI models. The effort brings together roughly 25 signatories, with Nvidia also listed among the supporters, showing a broad industry push for a lighter regulatory approach.
The central message is that open-weight AI should not face restrictions before lawmakers fully understand how the technology is developing. By presenting a united front, the companies are signaling that they see open access to model weights as an important part of innovation, research and competition in the AI sector.
The debate also reaches beyond current AI policy. Supporters of the letter are reportedly drawing comparisons to disputes over open-source software in the 1980s, suggesting that overly aggressive rules at an early stage could slow progress and reduce the benefits that more open technical ecosystems can create.
Google’s support is especially notable because it aligns the company with rivals including OpenAI and xAI on a sensitive policy question.
