Ukraine is seeking a long-term energy partnership with Canada, with Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal saying Kyiv wants to sign a 30-year strategic energy agreement. The proposal also includes what he described as an energy security bridge centered on supplies of Canadian liquefied natural gas.
The discussions appear to be tied to Ukraine’s immediate winter needs as well as its broader energy strategy. According to the report, the two sides talked about a direct Canadian grant worth $650 million that would help Ukraine purchase gas for the coming winter.
The push highlights how Ukraine is trying to secure more stable fuel sources while managing pressure on its energy system. A deal focused on Canadian LNG would point to a longer-term effort to strengthen supply options and improve resilience.
If advanced, the plan would combine short-term financial support with a longer-range energy framework between the two countries. That makes the talks notable both for winter preparedness and for the wider goal of deepening Ukraine-Canada cooperation in energy security.
