A UCLA Health study in mice suggests that even mild inflammation during pregnancy can leave lasting effects on offspring brain function and behavior. According to the report, the mice developed persistent brain overactivity along with sensory sensitivity, repetitive behaviors, and a higher risk of seizures.

The striking finding was how quickly those problems appeared to improve. Researchers found that a single dose of rapamycin given to adult mice reversed nearly all of the autism-like symptoms within hours, pointing to a brain pathway that may remain active long after early developmental exposure.

The work adds to evidence that prenatal immune activity can shape brain development in ways that continue into adulthood. It also suggests that some of those changes may not be permanently fixed, at least in this mouse model, if the underlying signaling problem can be targeted later in life.

Even so, the findings are limited to mice and do not mean the same treatment would work for people with autism. The study is best seen as an important early step in understanding how inflammation during pregnancy may alter the brain and how those effects might someday be addressed.
