That means a distant observer using today’s most common biosignature test could have looked at Earth and failed to spot life.

The idea matters because oxygen is often treated as one of the strongest signs that a world may be biologically active. But Earth itself shows that life and a clearly detectable oxygen signal do not always appear together. According to the report, life was present by at least 3.5 billion years ago, long before our atmosphere would have advertised that fact to astronomers elsewhere.

That creates a major challenge for NASA’s new planet-hunting telescope and for the broader field of exoplanet science. A telescope could be staring directly at an inhabited planet and still see an atmosphere that looks unremarkable by current standards. In other words, worlds similar to early Earth might be alive yet still appear empty if oxygen is the main yardstick.

The finding suggests that the search for habitable planets may need to rely on a wider set of clues instead of treating oxygen as the decisive signal. Earth’s long hidden biosphere is a reminder that life can reshape a planet slowly, and that some inhabited worlds may stay difficult to identify from afar even with powerful new instruments.
