Deep beneath the Antarctic ice at the South Pole, scientists have effectively turned a huge block of frozen water into a telescope. About 2.5 kilometres below the surface, a cubic kilometre of ice has been fitted with 5,160 light sensors, creating an observatory unlike traditional instruments that rely on mirrors or lenses.

The detector is built to study neutrinos, often called ghost particles because they pass through matter with almost no interaction. By looking for particles that have travelled through the entire Earth before reaching the South Pole, the observatory can examine signals arriving from the opposite side of the planet.

That unusual design gives researchers a way to explore some of the universe's most extreme and energetic events. Because neutrinos can escape places and processes that ordinary telescopes cannot easily see, the buried Antarctic instrument can reveal cosmic activity that remains hidden in visible light and many other forms of observation.

The result is a different kind of astronomy, carried out not by pointing upward with glass and metal, but by using the deep polar ice itself as the detector. From below the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, this neutrino observatory is helping scientists track elusive particles and expand how the universe is observed.
