Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal has said President Bola Tinubu was a major force behind the creation of the All Progressives Congress and the party’s 2015 election effort. In his account, Tinubu did more than support the opposition alliance politically, taking on a central part in bringing the coalition together.
Lawal also claimed Tinubu financed the APC campaign in 2015. The remarks present Tinubu as one of the key figures in the opposition push that eventually ended the Peoples Democratic Party’s long hold on power at the federal level.
According to Lawal, Tinubu was focused at the time on the wider political objective of removing the PDP from office, even while he had his own presidential ambition. Lawal’s version suggests Tinubu chose to set that ambition aside in order to prioritize building a united front strong enough to win nationally.
The comments add to the continuing debate over how the APC was formed, who funded its rise, and which leaders made the biggest strategic sacrifices before the 2015 election. Lawal’s claims place Tinubu at the center of both the party’s formation and its campaign machinery during a turning point in Nigerian politics.
