Rockstar has clarified concerns over GTA 6's so-called physical release in Japan, confirming that some PS5 download codes there will expire after 170 days. The issue drew attention because fans were already frustrated that the physical edition does not appear to include a game disc, but instead provides a code to download the title.
According to the clarification, the 170-day expiration window applies only to the PS5 version sold in Japan. Rockstar said buyers in other parts of the world will not be affected by that limit, narrowing what initially looked like a broader problem for all physical purchasers.
The company also addressed Xbox players, stating that Xbox codes are not region locked and will not expire. That distinction is likely to matter for collectors and import buyers, especially as players compare how the game's digital-only distribution is being handled across platforms.
The update does little to ease the wider debate around GTA 6's physical packaging, which has become a talking point among fans who prefer discs and long-term ownership. Still, Rockstar's latest explanation makes clear that the expiration policy is a Japan-specific PS5 issue rather than a global rule for every copy of the game.
