UNESCO's World Heritage Committee has added six more locations to its List of World Heritage in Danger, expanding the number of sites flagged as being under serious threat. The decision was taken on Sunday during the committee's meeting in Busan, South Korea.
According to the committee, three of the newly listed places are in Palestine, South Sudan and Lebanon. Those three were added on an emergency basis because of what UNESCO described as imminent threats.
The danger list is used to identify World Heritage sites that require urgent attention because of risks that could damage their cultural or natural value. By placing sites on the list, UNESCO highlights the need for closer monitoring and faster protective action.
The latest additions show how quickly heritage sites can become vulnerable and how international bodies are responding when threats intensify. The Busan meeting put renewed focus on the pressure facing important sites in several parts of the world.
