Nvidia is reportedly in discussions with OpenAI over a financing package worth about $250 billion tied to a huge data centre project, according to The Wall Street Journal. The reported arrangement would involve Nvidia providing guarantees to help support the financing.

The talks point to the enormous scale of infrastructure now being considered for advanced AI systems. Large data centres require vast amounts of computing hardware and energy, and Nvidia's role in the reported plan would underline how central chip suppliers have become to the buildout of AI capacity.

The report also says power for the project is controlled by the US government, while separate funding is being provided by Japan under a recent trade deal. That adds a geopolitical layer to the proposed project, with government-linked decisions affecting how key resources are allocated.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is reportedly involved in deciding who will receive access to that power. While many details remain unclear, the discussions described in the report show how closely AI expansion, financing, energy access and international policy are becoming intertwined.
