Amazon is seeking regulatory approval for a new satellite system that could bring cellphone connectivity from space starting in 2028. The company has filed an application with the FCC for a low-Earth-orbit constellation designed to support direct-to-device mobile service.
According to the filing details described in the report, the proposed network would include more than 5,000 satellites. The goal is to create a global service that can link with phones directly, expanding Amazon’s ambitions in the satellite communications market.
The plan also points to the use of Globalstar spectrum for the direct-to-cell offering. That detail suggests Amazon is positioning the project around space-based mobile coverage rather than only traditional satellite broadband.
If approved and deployed on schedule, the constellation would mark a major expansion of Amazon’s space strategy. It would also place the company more directly into the growing race to offer mobile connectivity through large satellite networks in orbit.
