That idea is striking because these disasters seem very different on the surface. One wipes out large numbers of species, another reshapes the planet through vast outpourings of lava, and another disrupts marine life by starving the seas of oxygen. The study argues that, despite those differences, they may belong to the same broad rhythm in Earth’s deep history.
If that pattern holds up, it could change how scientists think about the timing of global catastrophes. Rather than treating each event as fully isolated, researchers may be able to examine whether some of the biggest turning points in the planet’s past cluster together in recurring intervals.
The finding does not automatically explain what drives the cycle, but it adds weight to the idea that Earth’s worst disasters may be linked by more than coincidence. For scientists studying extinction, volcanism and ancient ocean change, the proposed 27 million-year pattern offers a new way to connect some of the most dramatic events in the geological record.
