NASA has detected intense heat rising from beneath the surface of Io, Jupiter’s innermost large moon and the most volcanic world in the solar system. The finding comes from two recent close flybys, when a NASA spacecraft gathered data that allowed researchers to look below the moon’s outer crust.

The observations point to strong subsurface warmth rather than heat limited to surface eruptions alone. Scientists say the signal appears to be coming from below a solidified outer layer, offering a clearer view of how Io’s volcanic activity continues to reshape the moon.

One possible explanation is that the heat is tied to cooling lava flows buried beneath a hardened crust. If that interpretation holds, it would help explain how Io can remain so geologically active while hiding part of its volcanic energy under the surface.

The result adds to growing efforts to understand how Io’s interior works and why the moon is so extreme compared with other worlds. Studying its hidden heat could also improve scientists’ understanding of volcanism, planetary interiors, and the powerful forces at work in the Jupiter system.
