Astronomers have long thought that nearly every large galaxy contains a supermassive black hole at its center, with a mass ranging from millions to billions of suns. These objects grow by pulling in surrounding matter, but that simple idea runs into a major problem when black holes become active.
As they feed, black holes can also launch extremely powerful jets of energy. Those jets can drive nearby gas far away from the galactic core, seemingly removing the very material the black hole would need in order to keep gaining mass. That has made black hole growth one of the more stubborn puzzles in galaxy science.
The emerging picture suggests the answer may lie in how black holes interact with their wider surroundings rather than just their immediate neighborhood. Even when jets push gas outward, that material may not be lost forever. Instead, the gas can remain part of a larger galactic reservoir, allowing black holes to continue drawing on it over long periods.
This idea helps explain how supermassive black holes can keep growing without appearing to run out of fuel. It also reinforces a broader view in astronomy: black holes do not evolve in isolation, but as part of an ongoing exchange with the galaxies around them.
