A new electric vehicle startup is trying to tap into America’s growing curiosity about very small cars. Chip Motors is drawing attention with a quirky EV that resembles a tiny Jeep and includes a self-parking feature, positioning itself in a niche that sits somewhere between microcar enthusiasm and the golf cart market.

The timing is notable. Interest in compact, unconventional vehicles has been building, with names like Slate Truck, Amble’s dune buggy and Fiat’s Topolino helping fuel talk of a small-car revival. Japan’s kei cars and trucks also have a loyal following, even if the broader US market for microcars remains limited.

That makes Chip Motors’ approach an interesting test of whether American buyers are ready for something smaller, more playful and more specialized than a typical electric car. A Jeep-like look could help the vehicle stand out, while the self-parking capability adds a tech angle that may broaden its appeal beyond novelty alone.

Even so, the bigger question is whether a startup can turn niche interest into real demand. Microcars and golf cart-adjacent vehicles continue to attract attention for their size and character, but breaking into the US market remains a challenge. Chip Motors appears to be betting that design, convenience and the current appetite for unusual EVs could help change that.
