OpenUK is urging the British government to do more to keep UK-built open source work under UK stewardship. In its recent AI Openness report, the group argues that Britain should create its own foundation to hold code, governance and standards instead of seeing locally developed projects drift into overseas structures.
The argument is tied to a broader concern about how open source innovation is handled once it gains wider adoption. OpenUK says Britain has strong engineering talent and can produce important projects, but the country may be losing influence when governance ends up elsewhere.
As an example, the report points to MCP, which was built by two engineers in London but later came under US-based governance. For OpenUK, that case highlights a gap between where technical work is created and where long-term control and decision-making sit.
The proposal suggests a more formal UK home for open source assets and standards work, especially as AI-related tools and infrastructure grow in importance. If adopted, the idea could give Britain a stronger role in managing the projects its developers help create, rather than mainly contributing to frameworks led abroad.
