According to the study description, memory systems are often assumed to be largely mature by early adolescence. But the findings indicate that development in the retrosplenial cortex may continue beyond that stage, affecting how contextual memories are expressed and maintained.
The researchers report that adolescence is associated with a loss of perineuronal nets, or PNNs, as well as changes in parvalbumin in the retrosplenial cortex. Both are important markers in the structure and function of neural networks, so their reduction may help explain why contextual memory circuits become less stable during this developmental window.
Taken together, the work highlights late adolescence as an active period of brain remodeling rather than a simple endpoint of memory circuit maturation. The findings add to growing evidence that the adolescent brain remains highly dynamic, with changes in specific cortical regions shaping how memory functions over time.
