Spain and France are preparing for another spell of extreme heat, with temperatures expected to climb past 40C in some regions. The hotter weather is likely to raise the risk of new fires and make it harder for emergency crews already battling major blazes.
In southwest France, the wildfire near Bordeaux remains a major concern. The fire has moved close enough to populated areas to force large evacuations, and one resident said 17,000 people were moved out of his town during the night after the blaze suddenly grew two days earlier.
The damage in the surrounding region is already extensive. According to the report, 42,000 hectares of land have burned so far, highlighting the scale of the fire and the pressure on firefighting teams as temperatures rise again.
With a new heatwave building across parts of western Europe, authorities in both France and Spain are facing a difficult period. Any further rise in heat could intensify wildfire conditions and complicate efforts to protect communities near active fire zones.
