A tornado tore through part of Wisconsin on Monday, causing widespread damage in Winnebago County and knocking out electricity to more than 30,000 homes and businesses. Early reports described homes being splintered and trees brought down as the storm moved through the area.
The National Weather Service said radar confirmed a tornado in Winnebago County, which is about 90 miles northwest of Milwaukee. That confirmation helped explain the concentrated damage reported after the storm passed.
Officials were assessing the impact as utility crews worked to restore service. Power outages affected thousands of customers, adding to the disruption for residents dealing with damaged property and blocked roads.
The storm added to concerns about severe weather across the region, with cleanup expected to continue as authorities survey the hardest-hit areas. Wisconsin communities in the tornado's path were left dealing with broken homes, debris and major service interruptions.
