NASA’s latest Earth visualization has drawn attention because it makes the planet look uneven, almost like a potato. The image is not a picture of Earth’s real outer form, but a gravity-based model known as a geoid that shows how the planet’s gravitational pull varies from place to place.

In this kind of model, sea level is used as a reference surface and then reshaped to reflect differences in gravity. Where gravity is slightly stronger or weaker, that reference level appears to rise or fall, creating the unusual outline seen in the NASA rendering. The result helps explain that Earth is not simply a perfect sphere or even a smooth ellipse.

The geoid gives scientists a more useful way to study the planet’s gravity field than a basic globe would. By mapping those subtle changes, researchers can better understand how mass is distributed across Earth and how that affects measurements tied to sea level and position.

NASA says the updated model can also support more accurate navigation systems. Because navigation depends on precise references for location and elevation, better gravity data can improve how those systems calculate positions around the world.
