A political dispute has broken out between British Conservatives and France after shots were fired from a vessel near Tory MP Chris Philp. Philp said he would take up the matter with the French ambassador, turning what authorities described as a maritime episode into a broader UK-France political row.
The argument sharpened after Philp linked the incident to the long-running debate over illegal Channel crossings. He suggested the response near a visiting British politician contrasted with what he sees as insufficient action to stop small-boat migration, a criticism that is likely to resonate with Conservative voters focused on border enforcement.
French and British authorities, however, have pointed to a different explanation. According to officials on both sides of the Channel, the firing was part of a routine training exercise rather than a hostile act aimed at Philp or his vessel.
Even so, the episode risks adding tension to an already sensitive relationship between London and Paris over Channel security and migration policy. With Philp promising to raise the matter diplomatically, the incident is likely to remain part of the wider political argument over how France and the UK police their shared waters.
