NASA’s Cassini mission did not end because the spacecraft suddenly failed. On 15 September 2017, the probe was deliberately sent into Saturn’s atmosphere while it was still operating, with eight instruments continuing to send back data during its final descent.

The reason was planetary protection. Mission planners faced the possibility that an aging spacecraft could one day lose control and drift into Enceladus, one of Saturn’s moons. Because Enceladus is known for its liquid ocean and hydrothermal activity, scientists wanted to avoid any chance that microbes from Earth could contaminate an environment considered important in the search for life.

That made Cassini’s destruction a scientific and ethical choice rather than a technical accident. Instead of leaving the spacecraft in space until its orbit became uncertain, NASA chose a controlled end that would protect potentially habitable worlds in the Saturn system.

Cassini’s final dive therefore served two purposes at once: it prevented future contamination and allowed the spacecraft to keep collecting information until the last moments of the mission. The ending underscored how seriously space agencies treat the protection of alien environments when exploring places that may have the ingredients for life.
