Microsoft says this week’s Xbox outage should not have prevented players from using games on disc. The company’s clarification addresses a major concern for console owners who expected physical copies to remain usable even when online services were disrupted.
The issue matters because Xbox game discs still go through licensing or entitlement checks. Even so, Microsoft indicated that those checks are not supposed to stop disc-based games from working offline during an outage.
That distinction is likely to fuel more discussion about how physical media works on modern consoles. Many players buy discs in part for the added security of being able to play without depending on digital services, so any sign that an outage could interfere with that experience draws attention quickly.
Microsoft’s explanation suggests the service disruption should not have affected normal offline access for disc owners. While entitlement systems remain part of the Xbox ecosystem, the company’s position is that physical games should still be playable without an active connection when everything is functioning as intended.
