Meta has expanded WhatsApp for Web to support audio and video calling, ending a long period in which calling was limited to the mobile app and the native desktop app. The update means users can now make and receive calls directly from the browser-based version of WhatsApp.
The new WhatsApp Web calling feature brings the web experience closer to what users already get on smartphones and desktop computers. Along with basic voice and video calls, the web app will also support features such as screen-sharing and in-call reactions.
For WhatsApp users who rely on a browser during the workday or while switching between devices, the change removes the need to open the desktop program or reach for a phone just to place a call. It also marks another step in making WhatsApp’s web app more fully featured.
The move gives WhatsApp for Web a more complete communication toolkit and aligns it more closely with the platform’s existing apps. With calling, screen-sharing and reactions available in the browser, the web version becomes a more practical option for everyday use.
