Researchers have identified a source inside the Milky Way that can produce extremely high-energy particles, offering a major clue in the long-running mystery of cosmic rays. These particles are made mostly of protons, with a smaller number of electrons mixed in, and they travel through space with enormous energy.
Cosmic rays have puzzled scientists for decades because some of them reach energies beyond what human-made machines can achieve. Even powerful accelerators such as the Large Hadron Collider cannot match the most extreme examples seen in nature, making their origin one of the key questions in astrophysics.
By tracing these particles to a source in our own galaxy, the new research helps narrow down where at least some of the Milky Way's most energetic cosmic rays come from. That gives scientists a more direct way to study the natural processes capable of accelerating matter to such extraordinary levels.
The finding strengthens efforts to understand how violent environments in space generate and launch high-energy particles across the galaxy. It also provides an important step toward explaining how cosmic rays are produced and why some of them carry far more energy than anything created on Earth.
