Central trade unions and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha have announced a nationwide agitation on August 10, setting the stage for rail roko and rasta roko protests against the central government's labour, farm and economic policies. The joint action signals a broad alliance between organised labour and farmer groups.
At the centre of the protest are demands to repeal the labour codes and provide a legal guarantee for minimum support price, or MSP. The groups say these issues directly affect workers and farmers and have made them key points of the August mobilisation.
The unions and SKM are also opposing privatisation in the public sector, describing it as part of a wider policy direction they reject. In addition, they have voiced support for students' movements, suggesting the protest platform is expanding beyond only labour and agriculture-related concerns.
The August 10 action is being framed as a coordinated national response, with organisers indicating that wider mobilisation could follow. By combining rail and road blockades, the protest is likely to draw attention to the growing pushback against what participants call pro-corporate policies.
