BYD has officially introduced the Racco, the brand’s first electric kei car developed for Japan. The model was first shown at the Japan Mobility Show last year and now enters one of the country’s most distinctive vehicle categories.

The BYD Racco is aimed at Japan’s kei car segment, a market built around compact dimensions and urban-friendly practicality. By creating a model specifically for Japan, BYD is taking a more localized approach as it looks to compete in a space that has long been important to local buyers.

One of the headline figures is its claimed range of up to 320km. That gives the BYD Racco a key talking point in the small EV market, where efficiency, size and everyday usability are major factors for buyers considering an electric microcar.

The launch also highlights BYD’s broader push to expand its EV presence with products tailored to regional demand. With the Racco, the company is not just adding another electric car to its lineup, but entering Japan’s kei car market with a model designed around local expectations.
