Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee has taken its dispute with the International Olympic Committee to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, challenging the IOC’s decision to restore the Russian Olympic Committee to Olympic structures. The move turns a major sports governance disagreement into a formal legal battle.
According to the complaint described by Ukrainian officials, the reinstatement was made too early and risks sending the wrong signal at a sensitive moment. Ukraine argues that the decision does not reflect the seriousness of the wider issues surrounding Russia’s place in international sport.
The appeal also centers on sports law and Olympic rules. Ukraine’s position is that bringing Russia back at this stage could weaken legal standards and undermine the consistency expected from the Olympic system when handling disputes involving national committees.
The case now places the matter before CAS, which handles many of the most important legal conflicts in global sport. Its eventual ruling could shape how the IOC’s authority is viewed and how similar reinstatement decisions are judged in the future.
