Michael Lockshin’s Russian-language adaptation of “The Master and Margarita” is finally heading to U.S. theaters after a long delay. The film, based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s celebrated novel, is being released stateside by Luminosity Pictures.
According to the release plans outlined so far, the movie will begin its U.S. theatrical rollout on Sept. 18. The launch comes after a lengthy legal battle that had slowed the film’s path to American cinemas.
The long-awaited release is notable for fans of Bulgakov’s work as well as audiences tracking international literary adaptations. Lockshin’s version has drawn attention not only because of the source material’s reputation, but also because it is a Russian-language production reaching the U.S. market.
With the legal issues now apparently resolved enough for distribution to move forward, “The Master and Margarita” is set to get the U.S. theatrical run that had been anticipated for some time. The Sept. 18 debut gives the adaptation its first major chance to connect with American moviegoers on the big screen.
