Transportation Security Administration officers at an Alabama airport discovered Civil War-era cannonballs inside a checked bag on July 18, according to a TSA announcement. The items were flagged during baggage screening, turning what began as a routine scan into a case involving historical artifacts.
TSA said Lead Officer Justin Dupree noticed the objects on an X-ray image and took a closer look. The cannonballs were identified as relics from the Civil War period, and the discovery quickly raised broader questions beyond standard airport security screening.
Authorities later linked the luggage find to a stolen artifact case, giving the incident an unusual twist. The combination of antique weapons-related items, air travel, and an alleged theft investigation led some reports to describe the case as "Indiana Jones-esque."
