Einstein’s theory of relativity changed the everyday idea that time moves at the same rate for everyone. In this view, there is no single universal clock governing the entire universe. Instead, the passage of time depends on motion, which is why scientists say very fast travel can alter how much time passes for different observers.

A clock aboard a rapidly moving spacecraft does not appear broken to the people traveling with it. Inside the ship, life goes on normally: the clock ticks as expected, bodies function as usual, and ordinary processes continue at their regular pace. But when that spacecraft is compared with someone who remained at rest, relativity says less time has passed for the travelers.

This effect, known as time dilation, becomes stronger as speed increases. The closer an object gets to the speed of light, the more extreme the difference becomes between the traveler’s elapsed time and the time measured by an outside observer. That is the core of the idea that fast-moving travelers age more slowly.

The strange conclusion comes from the way space and time are linked in relativity. At everyday speeds, the effect is too small to notice, so time seems universal. Near light speed, however, that intuition breaks down, revealing a universe in which time is flexible rather than fixed.
