Australia’s online safety watchdog has started legal action against Telegram, arguing that the messaging platform did not do enough to remove violent extremist material. The case centers on allegations that content promoting or depicting extremist violence remained available on the service.

According to the watchdog, the disputed material included videos described as white supremacist content. The regulator says Telegram failed to take down that material as required, prompting the move to court.

The action adds to broader scrutiny facing major messaging and social media platforms over how they handle harmful content. Encrypted and lightly moderated services have often been at the center of debates about the balance between user privacy, free expression and public safety.

For Telegram, the Australian case represents another challenge over platform moderation and compliance with local rules. For regulators, it signals a tougher approach toward companies they believe are not responding quickly enough to extremist and violent content online.
