NASA’s Curiosity rover has identified a broad “sea of polygons” on Mars, a honeycomb-like ground pattern spread across a valley. According to NASA, it is the largest area of this kind of terrain that the rover has found so far during its mission.

The discovery stands out because polygon-shaped surface textures on Mars have often been studied as possible clues to the planet’s watery past. Researchers have linked similar patterns to environmental conditions that may have involved water, making the new finding especially important for understanding how this region formed.

Curiosity’s latest observation adds to a growing picture of Mars as a world with a far more active geological and climate history than its dry surface suggests today. A larger field of polygon terrain gives scientists more material to compare with earlier rover findings and orbital images.
