The Chicago Cubs outlasted the St. Louis Cardinals in extra innings Thursday, overcoming a game that was defined by missed chances on both sides. Much of the afternoon turned on failed opportunities with runners in scoring position, keeping the matchup close deep into the day.
Wetherholt supplied one of St. Louis’ biggest highlights with a home run, giving the Cardinals a needed spark. But that swing was not enough to carry them to a win, as the offense could not consistently turn traffic on the bases into enough runs.
The Cardinals also got a solid effort from Andre Pallante, who helped keep the Cubs under control for stretches. Even so, Chicago stayed within reach and eventually did enough in extra innings to finish the comeback and take the result.
In the end, the game reflected the frustration described throughout the afternoon: plenty of chances, not enough execution. The Cubs were the team that finally broke through late, while the Cardinals were left to look back at the openings they could not convert.
