Russia is reportedly considering a payment arrangement in Indian rupees to help Bangladesh continue financial settlements linked to the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant. The proposal, cited by local media, is presented as a way to move funds despite restrictions affecting normal transactions.
According to the report, the idea is to use the Indian currency as an alternative settlement route for trade and loan-related payments tied to the project. That would allow Moscow and Dhaka to work around US sanctions that have complicated transfers connected to the plant.
The Rooppur project has become a key focus because payment delays can affect the pace of a major infrastructure development. A rupee-based mechanism would not remove the broader geopolitical pressure, but it could offer a practical channel for handling outstanding obligations if both sides agree on the process.
For now, the reported plan shows how countries involved in large cross-border projects are exploring non-dollar settlement options when sanctions disrupt banking access. In this case, the proposed use of Indian rupees appears aimed at unlocking stalled payments and keeping the Bangladesh nuclear plant financing on track.
