India’s search for a first Commonwealth Games medal in men’s shot put is still on after Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill missed the podium in Glasgow. The two Indian throwers finished fifth and seventh respectively in the final.
Toor, the Asian Games champion, went into the event as one of India’s main hopes in the discipline. However, he could not produce a podium finish, leaving the country’s long-standing wait for a medal in the men’s shot put event unchanged.
Samardeep Singh Gill also competed for India and ended in seventh place. With both Indian athletes finishing outside the top three, the medal breakthrough that many were looking for did not arrive this time either.
Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi secured the gold medal with the best throw of the competition. His win highlighted the strength of the field, while India was left to reflect on another near-miss in an event where a Commonwealth Games medal has remained elusive.
