Researchers report that a single dose of rapamycin rapidly reversed autism-like symptoms in adult mice, with changes appearing within about two hours. The study focused on mice that had been exposed to inflammation before birth, a condition linked in this model to altered brain activity and behavior later in life.
According to the report, the treatment did more than improve behavior. Scientists also saw brain activity return toward a more typical pattern, suggesting the drug may have quickly affected the biological pathways involved in the animals’ symptoms.
The findings are notable because the effects were observed in adult mice rather than only during early development. That raises interest in whether some brain and behavioral changes tied to prenatal inflammation may remain reversible later in life, at least in this preclinical model.
Even so, the results should be understood as early-stage animal research. The study does not show that rapamycin can treat autism in people, but it does point to a possible mechanism for further investigation in conditions where inflammation before birth may play a role.
