Astronomers have finally measured the full extent of IC 1101, a giant galaxy long thought to be the biggest known. Using the deepest images ever captured of the object, researchers were able to identify its outer boundary for the first time.

That new view confirms IC 1101 as the largest known galaxy, with a span of about 520 kiloparsecs. In more familiar terms, that works out to roughly 1.7 million light-years across, underscoring just how enormous the system is compared with typical galaxies.

The key advance was not simply taking another look at IC 1101, but pushing observations deep enough to trace the galaxy's faint outer regions. Those dim edges are difficult to detect, which has made it hard to pin down the galaxy's true size until now.

By defining where IC 1101 actually ends, the study gives astronomers a clearer picture of one of the most extreme structures in the universe. The result strengthens its standing as the largest known galaxy and provides a more solid benchmark for future research on giant galaxies.
