A Martian day, or sol, lasts 39 minutes and 35 seconds longer than a day on Earth. That small daily difference has a major effect on the teams at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who operate Mars rovers, because their work must match the timing of the spacecraft on the planet’s surface.

At the start, the shift can seem minor. A workday that begins at 8 a.m. moves to about 8:40 the next day, then later again after that. Over time, the schedule keeps sliding forward until normal routines no longer line up with life on Earth, turning breakfast into a late-night meal and pushing sleep far out of sync with the local clock.

For rover engineers and mission staff, living on Mars time is part of the cost of planetary exploration. Their body clocks are forced to adjust to a rhythm set by a world tens of millions of miles away, creating a rolling schedule that can be physically draining and difficult to maintain over the course of a mission.

The strain is not limited to the control room. Families on Earth also feel the disruption as work hours drift through the day and night. The unusual timetable highlights a less visible side of Mars exploration: even when the spacecraft is on another planet, the human challenge of the mission is still being managed back home.
