Jagath Ramayanapu, also known as Shyam, has outlined his Google Summer of Code work for GNOME, focused on adding app uninstallation directly inside the GNOME Shell App Grid. The project is aimed at making a common desktop task faster and more convenient for users.
At the moment, removing an app in GNOME generally requires opening GNOME Software first. By bringing that option into the app grid itself, the proposed change would reduce the number of steps needed and make app management feel more integrated with the main GNOME Shell interface.
The update stands out as a usability-focused improvement rather than a major redesign. For many users, especially those who expect to manage apps from the same place where they launch them, direct uninstallation in the grid could make the desktop experience more intuitive.
Ramayanapu said he is working on the feature as a GNOME GSoC intern this summer. His post highlights how smaller workflow improvements in GNOME Shell can still have a meaningful impact by simplifying everyday interactions with installed apps.
