Michaela Walsh had to settle for silver in the featherweight final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, missing out on back-to-back gold medals. The experienced boxer was beaten on a unanimous decision by reigning world champion Jaismine Lamboria.
Although the result ended Walsh’s attempt to defend her title, it still added another major finish to her record at the Games. The silver medal means she leaves Glasgow with a fourth podium place from four Commonwealth Games appearances.
Walsh went into the bout as a highly decorated competitor, having collected 14 national titles during her career. Her run to another final underlined that consistency, even if the last contest did not go her way against a top-level opponent.
Lamboria’s victory in the women’s featherweight final gave the reigning world champion another significant title, while Walsh’s silver reinforced her status as one of the most reliable performers on the Commonwealth stage.
