Nigerian music star Daddy Showkey is marking 50 years on stage, reflecting on a career that began in tough circumstances and grew into one of the best-known stories in the country’s entertainment scene. The milestone is set to be honoured with an August 9 concert, while the singer looks back on the experiences that shaped his rise.
In recounting his journey, Daddy Showkey linked his story closely to Ajegunle, the Lagos community often associated with his early life and identity. He also spoke about a period of real hardship, saying he once scavenged for aluminium to survive before music changed his path.
The veteran performer also highlighted key moments and places that influenced his development, including what he described as a "Dyna" miracle, as well as the roles of Vanguard and Eko Hotels in his journey. Those references underline how his career was built not only on talent, but also on defining turning points that helped move him from struggle to national recognition.
Another major part of his reflection was the origin of the Galala sound, a style closely associated with his name and era.
