Scientists have long tied the dinosaur extinction to a giant asteroid impact about 66 million years ago. The object, estimated to be around ten kilometres wide, struck near what is now Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and helped bring the age of dinosaurs to a close.

A 2024 study adds a major new piece to that story by examining rare metals preserved in debris from the impact. Based on that chemical evidence, researchers concluded that the asteroid likely formed beyond Jupiter, placing its origin in the outer solar system rather than closer to Earth.

That finding matters because it changes how scientists think about the kinds of objects that reached the inner solar system in the distant past. If the dinosaur-killing asteroid came from so far out, it suggests material from the outer reaches of the solar system may have played a bigger role in Earth’s history than previously understood.

For decades, the main question was what ended the reign of the dinosaurs. This research shifts attention to where that object came from, using the composition of ancient impact debris to trace its path and offering a new view of the solar system’s violent early dynamics.
