Research at Carlingford Mountain in Ireland is offering fresh insight into how volcanoes work beneath the surface. An international team of volcanologists studying the ancient volcanic site found evidence that the classic picture of a permanent liquid magma chamber under a volcano does not always hold true.

Instead, the study suggests that underground magma plumbing systems can change over time, moving between more solid and more liquid conditions. That means volcanic systems may be far less static than many simplified models suggest, with molten material not necessarily sitting in one large, continuously liquid reservoir.

The findings are important because ancient volcanoes can preserve evidence that is difficult to observe directly at active ones. By examining Carlingford Mountain, researchers say they can better understand the internal structure and behavior of its modern-day active counterparts, described as its volcanic “brothers and sisters.”

The work adds to a growing effort in volcanology to refine how scientists interpret volcanic activity and the movement of magma below Earth’s surface. In practical terms, a better picture of these shifting subsurface systems could help improve how experts study active volcanoes and assess their behavior.
