A Sudanese man has been jailed after prosecutors said he piloted an overcrowded migrant dinghy across the English Channel. Authorities identified Bol Chuol, 27, as the person steering the boat, with a distinctive festive jumper playing a key role in linking him to the crossing.

According to the case outlined by the CPS, the small boat was stopped off the Kent coast on March 22. There were 71 people on board, including an 11-month-old child, highlighting the scale and risk of the journey.

The prosecution said the vessel was overcrowded when it attempted the crossing to the UK. Investigators were able to identify the pilot after the interception, focusing on the clothing he was wearing during the trip.

The case adds to continuing scrutiny of small-boat crossings in the Channel, where authorities have repeatedly warned about the dangers of loading large numbers of people onto unsuitable vessels for the journey.
