A sequel to Barbie has reportedly stalled at Warner Bros., despite the original film’s huge commercial and awards success. The main issue appears to be compensation, with studio chief David Zaslav unwilling to approve bigger salaries for stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
That slowdown stands out because Barbie was one of the biggest movie events in recent years. The film earned more than $1.4 billion worldwide and went on to receive eight Academy Award nominations, making it an obvious candidate for follow-up plans from the studio.
Even with that momentum, the report suggests a second movie has not moved ahead because the financial terms for its lead actors have become a sticking point. In other words, interest in Barbie 2 may be strong, but a sequel still needs internal approval on key budget decisions before it can progress.
For now, the situation points to a familiar Hollywood tension: balancing blockbuster expectations with talent costs. While Warner Bros. has clear reasons to want another Barbie film, the project appears to be on hold until those salary questions are resolved.
