Japan’s space agency says one of its probes has completed an exceptionally close pass by a near-Earth asteroid, coming within 400 meters of the object this month. The agency described it as the closest flyby ever recorded for a mission of this kind.

The spacecraft was described as refrigerator-sized, highlighting how compact the probe is compared with many larger deep-space missions. Even so, guiding a small craft to such a tight distance from an asteroid is a major technical achievement because these bodies are small, irregular and difficult to navigate around.
