Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is urging the federal government to formally list Kataib Hezbollah as a terrorist entity in Canada. His request is directed at the public safety minister and comes after a synagogue attack that the headline links to the Iran-backed group.
Kataib Hezbollah is described as a paramilitary organization tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, or IRGC. By calling for a terrorist designation, Poilievre is pressing Ottawa to take a tougher stance against a group he argues poses a serious security concern.
In making the case, Poilievre pointed to what he says has been a pattern of intimidation and violence affecting Jewish Canadians. He said synagogues, schools and businesses have faced shootings, vandalism, firebombings and threats, framing the issue as part of a broader need to respond more forcefully to antisemitic attacks.
The move adds political pressure on the federal government over public safety, extremism and Canada’s response to Iran-linked organizations. It also places renewed focus on how Ottawa handles groups accused of connections to violence targeting Jewish communities.
