Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, or NDLEA, says it has uncovered fresh efforts to move cocaine out of the country by hiding the drug inside everyday items. According to the agency, the intercepted shipments were concealed in a wooden mortar and a backpack and were meant for China and Italy.
The case highlights the lengths traffickers are taking to disguise illegal drugs in ordinary luggage and household goods. By using common objects, smugglers appear to be trying to avoid detection during export checks, but the latest seizure suggests those methods are still being identified by enforcement officers.
The NDLEA’s report adds to ongoing concerns about international drug trafficking routes linked to Nigeria and other global destinations. China and Italy were named as the intended endpoints in this latest interception, underlining the cross-border nature of the trade.
For the NDLEA, the seizure is another example of its continuing focus on stopping outbound narcotics shipments and exposing new concealment tactics. The discovery of cocaine in both a wooden mortar and a backpack points to the variety of methods being used in attempted exports.
