A major wildfire near Bordeaux in southwestern France remained contained on Sunday, but authorities were still dealing with active burning in the area. The fire has already scorched a vast stretch of land described as about four times the size of Paris.
The Bordeaux-area blaze also triggered a huge evacuation effort, forcing 224,000 people to leave. Even with the fire contained, conditions remained serious as crews continued working to prevent new flare-ups and stop the fire from spreading again.
At the same time, firefighters were battling a separate wildfire in Provence in southern France. According to the report, 1,500 firefighters were involved in that operation, underscoring the pressure on emergency services as multiple fires burned in different parts of the country.
The twin wildfire emergencies highlight the scale of the challenge France is facing, with one massive fire near Bordeaux still burning after widespread evacuations and another demanding a major response in Provence.
